Strong Growth Of Tesla Motor Cars With Tesla Roadster
By Eric Landis
Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is manufacturer of electric cars as well as powertrain components for electric vehicles. Tesla Motors became quite popular in the United States after launching its Tesla Roadster, the first complete electric car. Tesla followed it up with the Model S, a full-sized premium electric sedan.

After that, the shares have been steadily climbing based on the strong sales of its four-door full-sized luxury hatchback sports sedan car, Tesla Model S. The shares received a big boost after Tesla motor car reported its first quarterly profit in 10 years at $15.4 million on May 8, 2013. The shares jumped from $55.79 on May 8, 2013 to $87.80 on May 13, 2013, with investor confidence that Tesla electric cars would perform well in future.

Musk took a very active role in developing the first electric car for Tesla Motors and got himself deeply involved in the design of Tesla Roadster. Musk insisted that the Tesla motor cars should have carbon fiber bodies. He also concentrated on designing components suitable for the electric car, ranging from power electronics modules to headlamps, along with several styling cues.

The base price of the Roadster is $109,000. The Tesla motor cars arrived in the market with a good reception, when the deliveries of the Roadster began in July 2009 for the U.S. market. Tesla produced the right-hand-drive Roadster models for the United Kingdom and other countries in January 2010.

The Department of Energy of United States approved a $465 million interest bearing loan to Tesla Motors in June 2009. This funding supported the engineering design and production of the Model S, the full sized luxury sedan, the pride of Tesla motor cars. The funding also helped Tesla Motors to develop powertrain technology, which it could sell to automakers developing electric vehicles.

This low interest rate loan to produce Tesla motor cars was not like the bailout programs that GM and Chrysler received. In May 2013, Tesla Motors completely repaid the U.S. government loan, the first car company to do so. Others like Ford, Fisker, and Nissan are yet to repay the loans they received under this program.
