German car maker BMW is probably not the happiest camper right now. The mpg fuel-economy rating for its 328i automatic model has been downgraded by the Environmental Protection Agency.

    Dropped both highway and city

The miles per gallon on the BMW 328i automatic from 2012 now gets less gas mileage than at first predicted by requirements of the EPA. The numbers dropped to 23 mpg city and 33mpg highway from 24 mpg city and 36 mpg highway in just one week.

    Own tests done

Every car maker does a lot of tests that the EPA demands to figure out what the fuel economy rating is for the vehicle. Occasionally the EPA does a second test just to make sure while other times it will just accept the automakers' numbers. After doing its own test, the EPA decided that the BMW car needed a decrease.

    EPA tests only a handful

The EPA usually only tests about 15 percent of the automobiles sold in the States.

    Very small changes typically

The EPA, every once in a while, will make small changes in ratings, as implied in the fine-print disclaimer on its ratings stickers affixed to brand new automobiles. The BMW revision, dropping highway mpg by three, is quite severe. BMW, in a press release, said it was "surprised" at the "abnormally low" rating.

    Learn about BMW 328i

The 2012 BMW 328i packs a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder 240 horsepower engine that delivers 260 lb-ft of torque. It has an eight-speed transmission, which is operated by paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

    Standards for the EPA

The car was at first tested by BMW in Munich. An EPA fuel-economy test has to be done on an indoor track, under controlled conditions. The type of fuel is even specified, so that all variables remain constant. The vehicle is attached to a dynamometer and is put through five different test cycles: city, hot city, cold city, highway and aggressive highway.

    Expect lower rating to stay

The six-speed manual shift version of the 328i kept its 23/24 rating in spite of the change for the automatic version. BMW cannot ever change this since it will be unable to retest until it has the 2013 model to use.
