Every home should have a first aid cabinet stocked with all the basic supplies needed to take care of minor cuts and scrapes immediately after an accident occurs. Household accidents are very common and some people are more prone to injuries than others. Even when people are trying to be careful, accidents can happen at any time. There are several items to include in any first aid kit that can help anyone treat a minor injury and avoid a frantic and unnecessary trip to the nearest medical station.

One thing you will probably need is band-aid strips. Both plastic and woven ones will do the trick. The difference is the plastic ones are thinner and the woven ones are slightly thicker. So, it may depend on the cut as to which ones you should use. Or if you have someone that has slightly injured or cut their fingertip or knuckle area, you may want to have some fingertip and knuckle woven band-aid strips. Since the injury will more than likely be minor, then these can be kept on the area for a few days.

A large wound on the arm, leg or torso is best covered with a gauze pad. Gauze will keep the wound clean but the material permits air flow to promote proper healing. Consumers can choose from different size pads depending on the size of the injury. Before covering the injury, coat it with antibiotic cream. The cream will create a barrier against dirt and debris and speed up the healing process. It will also guard against infection, which can make the injury worse.

Eye wash is something that should be included in all household first aid kits. A piece of debris stuck in the eye can cause it to burn and water. This specially formulated solution will gently flush any foreign object or substance from the eye. Even after the eye has been thoroughly flushed out, a physician should be consulted to make sure there was no damage done to the eye surface. Purchase an emergency manual to include in the cabinet. Having useful information at your fingertips can help during an emergency situation when you may not be thinking clearly. Use the manual for guidance on treating minor injuries and illnesses.

Having a small first aid cabinet will come in handy for you and the family members that live with you. If they are old enough, they too, need to know what's in the first aid cabinet and should know how to utilize it.
