Sulkies are two-wheeled carts accommodating a single driver and are usually pulled by a horse. The first ones were used by doctors, tradesmen and other individuals who had to travel during the day for their work. Today they are used mainly for harness racing. The Jerald Sulky Company has been making sulkies since 1890 and continues to do so today.

The earliest sulkies used to be heavy contraptions with big wheels made of wood and the driver was perched high above and behind the horse. In the early 1890s the invention of pneumatic tires put the old wooden high-wheels out of use. When manufacturers started using these wheels, the weight of these carts was greatly reduced and their speed increased. By the middle of the 19th century the name was applied primarily to the vehicle used in races, and over the years it was made ever more streamlined and lightweight.

There are only a few companies manufacturing sulkies in the U. S. Today and the company started by Samuel Sulky is one of these. The design of his first cart quickly became popular and this inspired him to start producing these vehicles on a full time basis. In 1898 he moved production to a factory in Waterloo.

Today this company produces a range of carts of many types and sizes. Miniature show carts, pony and horse show, vehicles, racing carts and runabouts are all available for purchase from their online website. With the skills developed over many years and the use of the best materials, all these vehicles offer excellent quality and top performance.

Customers are given the option of customization of their carts too. They can select various different options such as the length of shafts, the type of undercarriage, the color of the cart, pinstripes and so on. This means that each cart has a unique appearance.

Customers are able to select the colors used for the carts they purchase. This can be maroon, cobalt blue, dark green or a wood look like Honey Oak, Mahogany and Walnut. They can also choose the color of the pinstripes and covers. The fabric used for the cushions can also be chosen and velvet, vinyl and corduroy are the options available.

The price of items varies and is also affected by the choices made. For example, choosing a deluxe chrome undercarriage over a painted one costs extra. One can filter according to price on the website, from least to most expensive. For example, when it comes to miniature show vehicles, customers have the option of choosing the least expensive mini roadster or the most expensive Devan Mini Viceroy.

The website also offers the option of purchasing various accessories. Cushions, whip sockets, boots, stirrups and dashes and a number of others can be purchased. Complete wheels and wheel parts are also available. Products for caring for a cart are available as well such as one for use on chrome parts to seal and protect them.

Extensive experience over many years has resulted in the production of quality vehicles and there is the added benefit of being able to purchase parts for repairs from the website too. Items like shafts, axles and undercarriage parts are available. The show, training or racing carts produced by this company are not only safe and durable but offer top performance too.
