    When one has specific needs that call for specialized pieces made from plastic, there are many methods that could be used. Depending on the intended function and necessary durability of the part, the option field will become more narrowed. For most situations, custom injection molding is known to be easy, affordable and generally efficient.

    This is a process by which molten plastic is injected into a mold to create a product, or component of one, in a quick and cost efficient manner. It may be used to make a singular item, or to mass produce a particular piece. When it comes to making parts of this type, there are many reasons why this is the preferred method of many manufacturers.

    Versatility is perhaps the most prominent reason why most manufactures turn to this process as their first preference. It has been used to create an infinite array of products such as containers, electronic housings, combs, figurines, bottle caps, toys and even parts of car interiors. There are very few limitation on how small, large or uniquely shaped the products may be.

    As a means of mass producing large quantities of an identical piece, this is generally the most ideal manufacturing option. Using molds that have multiple cavities of identical design in them allows a single cycle to generate a larger quantity of product at once. In this manner, needs are met quicker which means less time and money spent on production.

    The advantages of using this particular method are both strong and plentiful. Among them are a large selection of available source materials, minimal amount of waste created by scraps, the ability to repeat the process time and again, and comparatively low labor costs. Because molds produce such precise copies, there is very little finishing to be done once the items are released.

    The disadvantage, though few, could prove formidable in some circumstances. One of them is the fact that the pieces made in this manner may not be able to be placed in certain situations and might not be strong enough to handle high pressure loads. The most prominent concern is usually the investment of initially tooling the molds, however in mass production, this cost is quickly covered.

    Specific requirements such as the piece's intended function, location and necessary pressure tolerance is going to powerfully affect what substances may be used in its construction. Polymers like nylon, polyethylene, polystyrene and epoxy are just a few of the many thousands of available material choices. Under certain circumstances, even elastomers, glass, some metals and confections could be utilized in the process.
