Professional racing and Olympic games saw the first cast wheels containing 5-6 rigid spokes get introduced in the 80s. The introduction was for them to be used on specialized applications including time trials. Other applications remain widely performed by wire-spoked products.
The products are usually built from a number of materials, but stainless steel is the major material. Stainless steel remains in wide use because of its strength and elasticity. The strength gives it the ability to bear bigger loads without undergoing deformation. More recently, plastic has started to be used in many products, especially those made by the Chinese.
