Having a very stressful job one needs some downtime to enjoy the little pleasures that life can offer. Scale aviation is one that will keep your mind active but at the same time let you get some well deserved relaxation. Whether you buy one already fully assembled or building it yourself it is a hobby many are enjoying.

This began over two thousand years ago with tower jumping. Flying kites began seven hundred years BC in China. Some of these were so strong and big that they were able to carry a man into the air. Bamboo copter toys and small hot air lanterns had spinning rotors that enabled them to fly into the sky.

Many tried to analyze the atmosphere in the 17th century and this led to the discovery of hydrogen which then helped with the invention of the hydrogen balloon. The theory of mechanics and fluid dynamics led to the finding of modern aerodynamics. During the American Civil war these were used as observation posts during the Battle of Petersburg.

The model scale has an impressive 110 inch wingspan and has a gas engine of 30 cc. It is made up of balsa and plywood and all parts are made to specific measurements to ensure an accurate and balanced flight. In its final form it is very similar to the original in looks and in flight performance.

In war time this life sized aircraft was capable of tracking, attacking targets and finding anything on the ground by itself or with the assistance of ground support. The more modern ones now have more defensive measures which include a missile approach warning system, radar warning receiver and chaff and flare dispensers. This make the thrill all the more realistic.

Hot air balloons were used in the military by General Zhuge Liang who was said to use the small types to frighten away enemy troops. These are still known as sky lanterns and consist of a paper balloon and a small lamp which is placed on a frame inside. These are now used for the only purpose of pleasure during different festivals.

It is capable of storing and carrying four weapons including 500lb bombs, rail-launched missiles, illumination flares and 2.75 inch rockets. It is more than capable of aerial gunnery with an integrated or pylon mounted gun. Its landing and takeoff distance is 1800m and the operational climb speed is 9000m.

Many plans can be downloaded from the internet and these will tell you which materials you will need. Most of them are made from balsa wood, foam or plastic. If it is not going to move clay or robust paper can be used. It is very important that all parts are cut to exact measurements in order for it to be balanced correctly.
