Every vehicle requires a good engine in order to function efficiently. Although there are so many types of engines, the performance depends on effective combustion and genuine parts that maximize the efficiency. Regular maintenance is paramount if you want your engine to maximize air intake and combustion. Since these crucial operations take place in the VW cylinder heads, you should focus in this key area if you want to improve the efficiency of your vehicle.

While the Volkswagen golf is smaller than the Porsche, it is has become quite popular due to its unsurpassed acceleration, fuel economy and low maintenance costs. Surprisingly, the cylinder head of the 1500 CC golf TDI matches the bigger SUVs in terms of size and performance. A bigger engine allows the engineers to install longer camshafts and modern crankshafts that maximize piston displacement.

A 2500cc Volkswagen Touareg that has a faulty head cannot hold a candle to a new 1500cc Golf GTI. Flawed spare parts are likely to fail since the motorists tend to drive at high revolutions per minute to make up for the lost power. Accelerating above 3000 revolutions per minute takes its toll on the fuel economy and the integrity of the engine. Evidently, every part is unique, and if the pistons are not compatible with your engine, you will struggle to perk up the performance.

When you notice a significant loss of power, you should replace your valves and spark plugs. The valves are responsible for fuel ignition and combustion. However, even the best valves will not perform well if the cylinder head has some leakages. If you find some cracks, you must repair them immediately. A cracked head loses the combustion gases required to propel the vehicle, reducing the performance of your car significantly. Driving at high rpms to boost the power causes intense friction, increased wear and tear and poor fuel economy. To avoid these problems, you must adhere to the maintenance manuals by replacing the worn out parts, and checking the mileage limits.

Motorists have a myriad of choices when it comes to engine upgrades. However, without the right combination of valves and fuel injectors, their efforts are futile. Without a competent mechanic, it is quite daunting to choose the right crankshaft and camshaft for your vehicle. These combinations are subject to an assortment of displacement calculations that are likely to bewilder the average mechanic.

If you want to increase the engine capacity from 1700 to 3000 CC, you might have to buy a stronger oil pump, or regrind your crankshaft to accommodate the new changes. While an automotive engineer can undertake these tasks without breaking a sweat, the exercise is quite daunting for the untrained motorist. If you omit a crucial task in the process, the results can be catastrophic.

Gasket failure was common in the 1990s. Most gaskets were made of composite layers that had different thermal properties. Since these materials had varying rates of expansion, they were worn out easily, leaving some spaces between the head and the cylinder. Nowadays, the engineers insist on copper gaskets that remain intact when the temperatures rise.

The cylinder head is a complex system, and if the mechanic installs the wrong gaskets, the efforts to repair your vehicle can be counterproductive. The manufacturers developed the copper head gaskets to ensure that the entire unit is sealed properly. Since the modern Volkswagen owner has forgotten the problems of the 1990s, the prospect of rebuilding the old engines is very exciting.
