Two out of every ten drivers on the street is text messaging, according to a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. And fifty percent all those responding between the ages of 21 and 24 admitted to the deed. These amounts are up despite growing amount of states banning text messaging when driving. However, other figures indicate that the issue is even more prevalent than people will confess.

    What exactly are drivers doing?

The survey, released December 8, polled more than 6,000 drivers across the nation between the months of Nov and December, 2010. To be able to figure out why "some individuals continue to make bad decisions" while driving, the survey was completed.

David Strickland, head of the NHTSA, said:

"What's clear from all of the information we have is that driver distraction continues to be a major problem."

One in 100 at all times

Most people said they would answer the phone if they received a phone call while driving. These individuals would continue driving during the call also. As reported by the NHTSA, about one in every 100 drivers on the road is texting, emailing, using the internet or otherwise using a mobile machine at any given time. Even though there have been more state restrictions lately, the amount of incidents have increased 50 percent in the last year. Pennsylvania was the 35th state to start the texting ban in November.

About half of the people who replied said that their ability to drive was not affected by talking on a mobile phone even though the majority of the responders said they support state-wide restrictions. About a quarter said they could text or email with no impact to driving ability. About 90 percent of those surveyed said it made them nervous if they're a passenger in a vehicle and the driver is texting or emailing.

    Traffic fatalities lowest in decades

On the upside, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration figures also reported a decrease in traffic fatalities for 2010. This is despite the belief that traffic nationwide increased by 1.6 percent from 2009. And 32,855 people died on United States highways in 2010, compared to 33,808 deaths in 2009. The fatalities have not been that low since 1949.
