Having an effective emergency preparedness plan in place can mean the difference between life and death in the event of a disaster. It is important to know what to do if the house loses power during the winter and it is no longer possible to keep the home warm. Anyone stuck in a broken down car in the middle of winter is at risk of developing painful frostbite or life threatening hypothermia if there is no way to get warm.

One thing everyone should do is purchase a quantity of solar blankets. Store a few blankets in the house and a few in your automobile. This way you will be ready no matter what happens.

If your home heating goes out and is not likely to be repaired within a few hours, you will want to take into consideration not only the ambient temperature but the age and health of your family members. One of the most efficient ways of heating in an emergency situation is through the use of solar blankets and/or solar sleeping bags. Solar blankets are perfect for holding in body heat and are handy in many situations. Not only can a solar blanket keep you warm in a pinch, but if you are stranded in your car on a hot day you can use the solar blanket to deflect the sun and keep your car cooler by putting it in the windows that the sun is directly hitting. In cases of extreme cold, a solar blanket can keep you warm by storing your own body temperature. Just wrap yourself up in the silver blanket and let it's nearly magical properties keep you warm and toasty.

Also available for your heating in an emergency situation needs is a portable water heater. Portable water heaters connect to your garden hose and heat the water in a matter of seconds using propane. This can be useful for many reasons, but think of the hot cocoa producing capabilities on a cold night without heat. The pump runs on a rechargeable battery, so make sure you have the ability to recharge.

Other supplies can be helpful if you need an alternative source of heat in your car or home. Instant warming packs work just like the ice packs kept in most first aid kits. The packet warms up when the material inside is activated and it can be used to keep the hands or feet warm. When the power goes out you will also be in need of light. Store several flashlights in a central location and make sure you have extra batteries. Take the time to come up with an emergency plan before you need it and you will be glad you did.
