Police track motorists with radar, GPS and all the latest gadgets. But now drivers are using new technology to catch the catcher at his own game. Trapster, a free app, lets motorists know if they are approaching road dangers or speed traps. CNBC has teamed with Trapster to put together a list of the cities with the largest amount to speed traps.

    Ticket fines add up

In the U.S., there are about 100,000 tickets handed out each day by U.S. police officers. Every year, that is about $6 billion in fines that comes in.

Trapster is an online community of 15 million drivers who report driving hazards and the presence of law enforcement in their local communities in order to help other drivers.

    Top two cities

The top of the list consists of two locations that are fairly comparable. Both of them have a ton of driving challenges and red-light cameras to record it all. The police appear to be on the streets too. The number one listed area is New York City. Second is Los Angeles, California.

    Two in Texas

For speed traps in the nation, Houston got the number 3 spot and Austin got the number 10 spot. It is the only state that got put on the list twice, which individuals expected based on its strict law enforcement policies.

    Vegas and the nation's capital

Number four and number five were given to Las Vegas and Washington, DC. Vegas got the spot because it has activities all night and all day long. AOL Auto points out that there are 349 red-light cameras in DC attributed to its spot:

"(It's) pretty hard to speed in one of the most congested cities in America, but rushing through yellow lights that turn red before you get across the intersection is a big source of city revenue."

    Next few

Rounding out the list were St. Louis, Mo. at No. 6; Orlando, Fla. at No. 7; Chicago, Ill. came in at No. 8 and Colorado Springs, Colo., took the No. 9 slot.

    The legality of it

One law enforcement officer in Iowa was asked about the legality of warning others that there are speed traps on websites such as Trapster. He explained a little bit about this.

Kevin Ward is the Ottumwa Police Sergeant. This is what he said:

"It could depend on what their intentions are, if they know that they're trying to do something that would interfere with what the officer is doing, they could. But once again, it's proving what their intent is."

You can go to speedtrap.org to find speed traps as part of your area until that issue is taken to court.
